ABOUT THE PODCAST
The Fueling Forward Podcast is a passion project of mine that has been on my mind for a long time. Having been in practice as a sports dietitian for over 5 years working with hundreds of runners, and having been a runner at multiple levels of the sport myself, I've seen recurring themes around nutrition and performance across all levels and ages.

I began noticing that almost every single runner at some point has struggled with their relationship with food, body image, and even with the sport as a whole. I would hear from one runner who's story made me immediately think of another runner and I would say to myself "wow, I wish that runner could hear this runners story". Another thing I was consistently hearing from these athletes was "I wish I knew this earlier". This was a lightbulb moment for me when I realized how many people would benefit from hearing these stories, and from there the podcast was born!

My goal with the Fueling Forward Podcast is to create a space for runners (and other endurance athletes) to share their nutrition related experiences within the sport, both positive and negative, to help empower and inspire other runners. I want my listeners to know that they aren't alone in their struggles, and I want them to hear inspiring stories that will give them hope, confidence, and a sense of community. Some stories are more intense than others, but not all of them are just about struggles. I hope you enjoy this labor of love and find something useful in these episodes!

This Week's Episode: Amber Schulz
Episode 10: Interview with Amber Schulz
Amber grew up in Florida and got into running at a young age, where she was the 2021 4A Florida State Champion in XC and the runner up in 2022. Amber battled an eating disorder her junior year of HS, and after recovering she went on to run collegiately at the D1 level at High Point, then ended up transferring to Flagler, a D2 school back home in Florida. Throughout college, Amber experienced injuries, mental health struggles, and ultimately relapsed into her eating disorder, leading her to decide that collegiate running wasn't for her. She left college, moved back home, and now coaches youth running, runs for herself, and is working towards a degree in nutrition.

Would you try to put on a pair of shoes that you wore when you were younger? No! It’s ok to outgrow old goals and dreams, and grow into new ones. We grow and we change, and that’s beautiful.
Amber candidly shares her ups and downs with running, mental health, and her relationship with food. We discuss:
-
How what started as a goal to get healthier and run faster turned into an eating disorder
-
Amber's experience working towards recovery and going on to have the best season of her career her senior year of HS
-
The challenging transition from high school to collegiate running, and the mental health struggles that came with that environment
-
Amber's difficult decision to transfer, then ultimately leave collegiate running, which had previously been a lifelong dream
-
How she dealt with a relapse in her eating disorder and an identity crisis after moving back home
-
How Amber ultimately found a new love for the sport through youth coaching, and what her relationship with running and food looks like now
